Wendy Mitchell is the President of the Aurora Economic Development Council. The Aurora Economic Development Council’s mission is the creation and retention of primary jobs in the city of Aurora. It is a public/private partnership - the public sector partners are the city of Aurora, Arapahoe County and Adams County and the private sector partners are the leading companies in the metro Aurora/Denver area with business interests in Aurora. In a fiercely competitive national (and international) market, the organization assists companies by innovative deal creation through strategic private sector partnerships and encouraging business-friendly public policy. A partnership between business and government for more than 30 years, the Aurora Economic Development Council maintains a leadership position within the state’s most promising growth industries, including aerospace and defense systems, biosciences and transportation logistics.

As president of the Aurora Economic Development Council, Mitchell directs all operations of the organization including: business development, marketing, investor relations, and public policy. Some recent notable achievements are: leadership of a state legislative advocacy initiative to authorize issuance of $202 million of certificates of participation funding to construct educational facilities at the Anschutz Medical Campus; leadership in an initiative to widen I-225; leadership in the development of business parks at E-470 and I-70 near Denver International Airport; creation of the highly successful annual A-List luncheon that showcases Aurora’s economic achievements, one of the metro area’s largest and most prestigious events; tripling the organization’s annual budget during her six year tenure; and the creation and leadership of an annual congressional advocacy trip to Washington, D.C. to support Aurora’s targeted industries such as aerospace and bioscience.

Prior to joining the Aurora Economic Development Council in 2001, Mitchell was Vice President of Operations, Real Estate Operations for AMREP Southwest in Rio Rancho, NM for 10 years. Mitchell was responsible for land contract negotiations and new acquisition entitlements. Mitchell also oversaw AMREP’s marketing and advertising strategies and profit and loss operations.

Mitchell attended the University of New Mexico and conducts leadership activities on numerous professional, civic and community boards and associations including the Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation Board and National Marketing Committee, the Community College of Aurora Foundation Board, Citywide Bank Board, Southeast Business Partnership Ex-Officio of the Executive Committee, Regional Transportation Committee, Aurora Mental Health Board, and the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Board. Mitchell also was a past recipient of the Denver Business Journal’s 40 under Forty and a finalist in the Denver Business Journal’s DealMakers in Top Economic Development Deals. Mitchell received the prestigious Metro Denver Economic Development Corporation’s Economic Development Deal of the Year for 2004 and was named the Aurora Chamber of Commerce Business Person of the Year for 2005..
